U.S. stock market report 0936 ET 25May2011 Put buyers descend on Financial ETF this week
Option trading in the Financial Select Sector SPDR fund was again in the spotlight this week due to buyers of downside, said Susquehanna Financial Group's (SFG) derivative strategy team. The trading occurred late on Tuesday and involved longer-dated options as an investor bought the March $12 and $11 puts, 60,000 times, paying 61 cents for the package. In notable trading on Monday, an opening investor in the XLF bought 200,000 August $15/$13 put spreads, SFG said in a report on Wednesday. SFG noted in the Materials Select Sector SPDR fund, investors returned to buy 15,000 June $38 puts. The trading during the previous sesson in XLB is a continuation of a recent put buying trend, which includes action last week in various strikes in June, September, and December, the team said. In the tech space, an opening investor in the Semiconductors HOLDRS Trust on Tuesday bought downside via 7,500 June $34/$32 put spreads for 31 cents. 'Through this position, the investor has protection against further downside in the SMH, which is already down nearly 3 percent on the week,' SFG said.
