
LONDON (dpa-AFX) - The competitions in London 2012 Olympic Games came to end on Sunday with the United States regaining the global supremacy in sports from China, which emerged overall champions in the Olympics they hosted in 2008.
The United States continued the medal hunt on the final day, adding two more golds to their kitty. The US won 46 golds, 29 silver, and 29 bronze medals in this Games, finishing with a total medal tally of 104. China (38-27-22-87) could not win a single medal on the last day, while hosts Britain won a gold and two silver (29 17 19 65) to finish in the third position.
This is Britain's best post-war total in Olympics.
Russia overtook Britain in overall medal tally, but the less number of golds pushed them down to fourth (24-25-33-82).
The US overcame some fierce resistance from Spain to land their fifth Basketball gold in the six Olympic Games since the start of the 'Dream Team' era on a gripping final day of action.
