WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Vulcan Materials Co. (VMC) Tuesday reported higher earnings for the second-quarter, as sales grew 9 percent year-over-year.
Net income for the quarter rose to $45.96 million or $0.35 per share from $28.77 million or $0.22 per share a year ago. On average, 13 analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of $0.38 per share for the quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
On increased demand and higher pricing, quarterly sales increased to $756.28 million from $696.07 million last year, while analysts had consensus estimate of $770.72 million.
Looking ahead, the company expects capital spending to be nearly $240 million for 2014.
