WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - H&R Block, Inc. (HRB) , the largest U.S. tax preparer, reported a net loss for the third quarter of $36.9 million or $0.13 per share, compared to a net loss of $214.7 million or $0.78 per share for the year-ago quarter.
Excluding items, adjusted loss from continuing operations for the third quarter was $35.3 million or $0.13 per share, compared to an adjusted loss from continuing operations of $212.8 million or $0.78 per share in the prior year quarter.
Revenue for the third quarter jumped to $509.07 million from $199.77 million in the same quarter last year.
Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expected the company to report a loss of $0.17 per share on revenue of $517.70 million for the third quarter. Analysts' estimates typically exclude special items.
