BEIJING (dpa-AFX) - Typhoon Kujira, that hit Hainan island in China on June 22, made landfall in Vietnam today. The northeastern localities of Vietnam is experiencing strong winds and downpours. This is the first tropical storm experienced by Vietnam this season.
Sustained winds of around 10 to 90 kilometers per hour caused many disruptions. Flash floods and landslides are expected in the next hours in the northeast region.
The government officials have urged ships at sea to take shelter and thousands of port workers to return to land. Evacuation of fishermen along the coastal belt is on. People in landslide-prone area are asked to move from the area.
Kujira, meaning whale in Japanese, has caused damages across southern and eastern China. Several flights and trains have been canceled due to widespread thunderstorms and rain. Singapore's Silk Air airline had to divert its Boeing 737-800 from Sanya Phoenix International airport and made an emergency landing at Haikou Meilan International airport in China.
