BUCHAREST (dpa-AFX) - Romania's producer prices declined for the eighth straight month in May although the rate of decrease eased from the previous month, figures from the National Institute of Statistics showed Thursday.
The producer price index fell 2.4 percent year-over-year in May, slower than April's 2.8 percent decrease. In March, the index declined 1.1 percent.
Domestic market producer prices declined 2.2 percent in May, after falling 2.4 percent in the prior month. Producer prices in the export market also declined 2.9 percent in May, following a 3.5 percent decrease in April.
Among the sub-sectors, the year-over-year fall in prices of the manufacturing sector eased to 1.8 percent from 2.4 percent in April, while the decline in prices of mining and quarrying sector quickened to 7.4 percent from 5.7 percent. On the other hand, prices of utilities decreased 4.2 percent, the same rate of decline in the prior month.
However, producer prices rose 0.2 percent month-on-month in May, in contrast to a 0.5 percent decrease in the preceding month. Domestic market prices moved up 0.1 percent and foreign market prices increased 0.5 percent.
