World's Fastest Swimmers to Make Waves in Windsor in 2016 / Swimming Canada receives Government of Canada funding for the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m)

WINDSOR, ONTARIO -- (Marketwired) -- 08/01/15 -- Canadian Heritage

The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport), today announced the Government of Canada would provide $3.5 million in funding to Swimming Canada through Sport Canada's Hosting Program for the 13th FINA World Swimming Championships (25m).

This major international event will take place-for the first time in Canada-from December 6 to 11, 2016, at the Windsor Family Credit Union Centre.

Quick Facts

-- More than 900 swimmers from 170 countries will take part in these
championships, which will feature 46 events, including 34 individual and
    12 relay.
-- Swimming Canada serves as the national governing body of competitive
swimming. It includes 75,000 members and 400 swim clubs across the
country. Canadians are global leaders in high-performance swimming and
development for both able-bodied swimmers and swimmers with
    disabilities.
-- From November 1, 2014, to October 31, 2015, the Government of Canada is
providing $992,000 through Sport Canada's Athlete Assistance Program to
support 76 Canadian swimmers with living and training expenses. The
Government of Canada will contribute more than $5.5 million to Swimming
Canada in 2015-16 through Sport Canada's Sport Support Program for
programs and services that have a direct impact on athlete development.
-- The Government of Canada places great importance on high-performance
athletes, as well as healthy and active Canadians. In Economic Action
Plan 2015, it doubled the Children's Fitness Tax Credit to $1,000 to
help offset the costs of parents enrolling their children in organized
    sports.
-- Starting in 2016-17, the Government of Canada will invest up to an
additional $20 million into the next generation of Olympic and
Paralympic athletes to ensure they have what they need to push for the
podium, now and in the future.

Quotes

"Following the remarkable performance of our swimmers at the 2015 Toronto Pan Am Games, we have a good idea of what to expect from them at the 2016 FINA World Swimming Championships (25m). Once again, they'll have the privilege of competing against the best swimmers in the world, in front of a very enthusiastic Canadian crowd. Good luck to all!"

-The Honourable Bal Gosal, Minister of State (Sport)

"This is the second largest FINA event next to the long-course World Championships, and Canada-with the City of Windsor at the helm-is honoured to host this prestigious event. Mega sporting events could not happen without the support of the Government of Canada, and on behalf of the swimming community, we say thank you. The Government continues to demonstrate its commitment and dedication to sport by supporting this event. We find ourselves once again a destination to the world. Swimming is not just a sport but a national activity."

-Ahmed El-Awadi, Chief Executive Officer, Swimming Canada
