WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Jeb Bush received a high-profile endorsement in his race for the Republican presidential nomination on Thursday, as former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Virg., announced his support for the former Florida Governor.
In a statement, Cantor described Bush as a true conservative leader with a long-term vision for the country and the practical know-how to implement it.
'After eight years of anemic growth and declining international relevance, America needs a president that can re-energize our nation and recapture our greatness -- Jeb Bush is that man,' Cantor said.
He added, 'I look forward to working closely with the governor and his team as they chart a course to the White House.'
Cantor, who will also serve as co-chair of Bush's Virginia campaign, stepped down from Congress last year after his surprise loss in the Republican primary to Tea Party-backed challenger Dave Brat.
Republican frontrunner Donald Trump seemed unimpressed with Cantor's endorsement of Bush, pointing to the former Congressman's primary defeat.
'Who wants the endorsement of a guy (@EricCantor) who lost in perhaps the greatest upset in the history of Congress?' Trump said in a post on Twitter.
