BURBANK (dpa-AFX) - Disney has stopped selling a boy's costume of a Polynesian character in its latest upcoming animation movie Moana, after the costume was accused of racism by Pacific Islanders.
Disney apologized and pulled the costume from its website and stores.
'The team behind Moana has taken great care to respect the cultures of the Pacific Islands that inspired the film, and we regret that the Maui costume has offended some,' Disney (DIS) said in a statement.
The costume, which is based on Disney's animated depiction of Maui, has a long-sleeved brown shirt and trousers with the shirt covered with full-body tattoos. Maui is a key figure in Polynesian traditions.
