WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Congressman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, has suggested that he will continue to investigate Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server as Secretary of State despite her defeat in this week's presidential election.
Chaffetz, the Chairman of the powerful Oversight and Government Reform Committee, told the Washington Post he has a 'duty' to find thousands of Clinton's communications that have not been made public.
'It would be totally remiss of us to dismiss [the email investigation] because she's not going to be president,' Chaffetz said of Clinton.
'I still have a duty and obligation to get to the truth about one of the largest breaches of security at the State Department,' he added. 'Tens of thousands of documents still have not been turned over to Congress.'
Chaffetz told the Post he does not anticipate calling Clinton to testify but said he will probably call other State Department staff to do transcribed interviews with lawmakers.
In response, Congressman Elijah Cummings, D-Md., the Oversight Committee's top Democrat, called it extremely disappointing that Chaffetz plans to continue investigating Clinton for years to come.
'I think the American people deserve more from Congress than to continue squandering taxpayer dollars on these baseless Republican accusations and partisan attacks,' Cummings said in a statement to the Post.
FBI Director James Comey has said an investigation determined Clinton's handling of classified information was careless but did not rise to the level of a crime.
While President-elect Donald Trump has suggested he will seek to prosecute Clinton over her use of a private email server, the White House has not ruled out pardoning the former Secretary of State.
