WASHINGTON (dpa-AFX) - Senator Rand Paul, R-Ken., had some harsh words for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former U.N. Ambassador John Bolton and suggested they may have trouble getting confirmed if nominated by President-elect Donald Trump for Secretary of State.
In an appearance on CBS' 'Face the Nation' on Sunday, Paul suggested that Giuliani and Bolton are 'out there on the extreme' regarding foreign policy.
'I don't think they're very diplomatic,' Paul said. 'And I think you want the chief diplomat to be diplomatic.'
He added, 'I have said before Bolton might be better as a secretary of war, but he's certainly not a diplomat or someone who acts in a diplomatic way or thinks that diplomacy might be an alternative to war.'
Paul took particular issue with Giuliani and Bolton for continuing to support the Iraq war and advocating for regime change in Iran.
The libertarian-leaning Senator noted that Giuliani and Bolton are not guaranteed to get any Democratic support and could also see some Republicans voting against them if nominated.
Paul suggested that former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney, who is also reportedly being considered for Secretary of State, would be a more 'reasonable' and 'even keel' nominee.
