LONDON (dpa-AFX) - Domino's Pizza is training reindeer in Japan for pizza delivery in the freezing weather during the country's winter season.
In a video released by the Japanese unit, employees are shown leading the reindeer with delivery boxes attached to its back around a parking lot, and on a red sleigh. The test period is ongoing in the city of Ishikari in northern Japan's Hokkaido.
The employees monitor the reindeer's progress through smartphone with the company's GPS Driver Tracker. The company is said to be working with the Research Center of Hokkaido to make sure the safety of these animals.
Reindeer can travel trough heavy snow conditions where cars or bicycle fails to do.
Domino's Japan reportedly stated that the move is part of its pizza delivery action plan. Domino's opened its first store in Japan in 1985.
Domino's, which operates in more than 60 countries, is working on a variety of delivery methods around the world. Domino's has delivered pizza through drone in New Zealand, and has also sent food through canoe steered by a pizza buoy in Kent, UK.
