BATTLE CREEK (dpa-AFX) - Kellogg Co. (K) has come under the firing line after news website Breitbart News launched a campaign asking its readers to boycott the cereal giant's food products.
Breitbart's decision follows Kellogg's announcement that it will no longer advertise on Breitbart.com, the website formerly run by Steve Bannon, one of President-elect Donald Trump's top aides.
Breitbart launched a DumpKelloggs petition calling for a boycott of Kellogg's products. Around 150,000 people have reportedly signed the Breitbart petition to boycott the products.
Kellogg's decided to discontinue advertising on Breitbart, which has been infamous for featuring racist, sexist and anti-Semitic content, after one of its consumers notified the company about the presence of its ads.
'We regularly work with our media buying partners to ensure our ads do not appear on sites that aren't aligned with our values as a company,' Kellogg's spokeswoman Kris Charles said. 'This involves reviewing websites where ads could potentially be placed using filtering technology to assess site content. As you can imagine, there is a very large volume of websites, so occasionally something is inadvertently missed.'
