PARIS (dpa-AFX) - As the French people prepare to head to the polls for the first round of voting in the country's presidential election on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump predicted that the outcome will be impacted by Thursday's apparent terrorist attack in Paris.
'Another terrorist attack in Paris. The people of France will not take much more of this. Will have a big effect on presidential election!' Trump said in a post on Twitter on Friday.
The tweet from Trump comes after a French police officer was killed and two others injured in a shooting on the famous Champs-Elysees.
Trump has not officially endorsed a candidate in the French presidential race, although far-right candidate Marine Le Pen is seen as holding similar views on immigration and terrorism.
Recent polls have shown the race as too close to call, with Le Pen virtually tied with centrist Emmanuel Macron and Republican Francois Fillon and Communist-backed Jean-Luc Melenchon close behind.
With no candidate expected to win more than 50 percent of the vote, the top two candidates will likely head to a runoff on May 7th.
