RFID Readers Get Smart: SIS Announces the Java Mustang RFID Edge Appliance

HOUSTON, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- SIS Technologies today announced its new Java(TM) Mustang RFID Edge Appliance, a smart RFID reader that securely manages the expected explosion of RFID tags & sensors at the edge.

The Java(TM) Mustang is a secure, remotely manageable, cost-effective, multi-protocol RFID edge appliance featuring a complete Linux kernel and the full 1.4 Java 2 Standard Edition on-board. It was developed to use open standards-based technologies that deliver end-to-end security from the "point of read" to the back-end server.

"This is the smartest breed of readers on the market today," said Sean Clark, who joined SIS, a Sun Microsystems iForce(SM) partner, six months ago to spearhead SIS' RFID practice.

"The Java(TM) Mustang shrinks the server architecture required for RFID deployments and allows computing to take place at the point of read/write," said SIS Chief Operating Officer John Reed.

Its standards based platform combined with exceptional compute capabilities allows the integrator to deploy RFID middleware from companies like Cougaar Software, OATS, IBM and Sun, directly on the reader. This improvement decreases the complexity of an RFID deployment as well as the number of servers needed, avoids unnecessary traffic over the network, and reduces the total cost of deployment.

Cougaar Software, a leading provider of intelligent RFID middleware solutions, is enthusiastic about Java Mustang. Ric Fleisher, Cougaar's V.P. of Business Development, states, "Cougaar is creating an interface for our software through an integration effort on the Java Mustang reader. We will continue to evaluate its performance and look for opportunities to offer a combined solution to our customers."

Customers of Java Mustang can rely on its quality and availability, as it is produced domestically. "The Java Mustang is manufactured in Texas," said Jessica Bray, Chief Strategy Officer at SIS. "We looked in our own backyard, decreased the production time, and kept our development and manufacturing in close proximity."

"The Mustang's Sun Solaris(TM) Operating System for x86 Platforms and Microsoft XP versions are both in testing and will be shipping in early fall," she added. "We can't ignore the XP market for readers and middleware."

The Java(TM) Mustang currently supports 1-4 antennas, and its functionality includes a 1.2Ghz processor, 256 MB RAM, 2 USB ports, 1 serial port, 1 parallel port, 30G storage, 1VGA, PS2 keyboard and mouse. For more information, go to http://www.javamustang.com/.
