Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks Selected By KPN to Deploy New IP/MPLS Backbone Network

HILVERSUM, Netherlands and SUNNYVALE, Calif., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire- FirstCall/ -- Lucent Technologies today announced a contract with KPN to deploy one of Europe's first networks using Internet Protocol (IP) and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) technology.

The three-year agreement includes network design, equipment supply and deployment of Juniper Networks M-and T-series routing platforms, as well as maintenance and support provided by Lucent Worldwide Services.

Lucent and Juniper Networks will deliver a more efficient network that can enable KPN to offer services -- such as Ethernet, Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), carrier's carrier VPN and IP VPN -- over MPLS and can reduce operating costs.

"KPN is pleased to work together with Lucent and Juniper on this ambitious project, which is unique in Europe. Lucent and KPN have worked closely together for years on new technologies. This enables KPN to provide its customers with state of the art and future proof Ethernet and MPLS services," said John van Vianen, Senior Vice President Business Unit Connectivity for KPN.

KPN selected Lucent Technologies and Juniper Networks over several competitors who also bid for the business.

"This agreement underlines the strong relationship Lucent Technologies has with KPN and is the beginning of a new area of focus with KPN for the coming years," said Huub de Klerk, Customer Group Leader North Europe for Lucent Technologies. "It also illustrates the successful partnership we have developed with Juniper Networks to offer carrier-grade MPLS solutions. Lucent and Juniper Networks will continue to combine their expertise and knowledge, resulting in state-of-the-art solutions that enable carriers around the world to create innovative and revenue-generating services. We are extremely proud to be involved in this project, which puts us at the heart of next generation IP networks."

"The strategic relationship between Juniper Networks and Lucent enables customers to transform their networks to create IP/MPLS-based infrastructures with end-to-end high performance and assurance for supporting business- critical applications," said Eddie Minshull, vice-president of sales in EMEA for Juniper Networks. "This type of infrastructure is a key requirement for service providers evolving today's networks to Infranets, which combines the ubiquitous connectivity of the Internet with the assured performance and security of a private network."

Based on Juniper Networks M320 and T640 routing platforms, the new MPLS network, in its initial deployment, will enable KPN to deliver Ethernet services to its customers nationwide. The next phase of the deployment will interconnect the IP/MPLS core network and the ATM network using ATM-over-MPLS trunking, an industry-leading capability to deliver services with quality of service over IP/MPLS networks developed jointly by Lucent and Juniper Networks.

Vorsicht, geheim!
