American Banker To Honor Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase as 2004 Banker of The Year

NEW YORK, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Capping an extraordinary year for one of the banking industry's most powerful and influential leaders, Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan Chase will receive the top honor at American Banker's 2004 Banker of the Year Awards on December 1st in New York City.

Founded in 1836, American Banker is the award-winning daily newspaper for the financial services industry. Its annual Banker of the Year Awards honors the individuals who set the highest standards of progress, innovation, and performance in the banking and financial services industry.

The president and chief operating officer of JPMorgan Chase, Dimon will be among four industry leaders saluted at this year's gala. Other honorees announced today include Kenneth Guenther, retired president and chief executive officer of the Independent Community Bankers Association (ICBA), who will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award; William A. Cooper, chief executive officer of TCF Financial Corp. who will be honored as Innovator of the Year; and Mary Houghton, president of ShoreBank Corporation, who will be recognized as Community Banker of the Year.

According to David Longobardi, editor in chief of American Banker, Dimon's bold and aggressive role in engineering the integration of JPMorgan Chase and Bank One made him a clear choice for this year's top honor. Dimon is president and chief operating officer of the combined bank; he will become chief executive in 2006.

Longobardi also cited Dimon's work for turning around Bank One's profitability and reputation when he served as CEO of that company from 2000 to 2004.

"Jamie Dimon is an exemplar of a new generation of financial services executives who bring a strong sense of operational excellence to the table," said Longobardi. "It's Dimon's impact as COO that gives this merger the potential to be not simply a good combination but a great one."

Dimon currently reports to JPMorgan Chase chief executive William B. Harrison, Jr., who was the recipient of the Banker of the Year Award in 2000.

Kenneth A. Guenther, the recipient of this year's Lifetime Achievement Award, retired as president and CEO of the ICBA in March after nearly 25 years at the helm of the organization. During his tenure, Guenther single-handedly made the organization a lobbying force in Washington, thus giving small banks a powerful voice. Today, ICBA is the nation's largest banking trade association with the most member institutions.

William Cooper, chairman of Minnesota-based TCF Financial Corp. will be recognized as Innovator of the Year for his leadership in the national payments debate. While this honor recognizes Cooper's innovation in building TCF into a creative and profitable franchise serving the working class consumer market, it is dedicated to his outspoken role in the fast-changing payments marketplace, an arena in which only the very largest banks have traditionally had any influence. Under Cooper's direction, TCF has grown into a top-15 Visa debit card issuer. Cooper earned his reputation as a maverick advocate for regional and debit card-only banks in an industry dominated by the largest credit issuers when TCF filed a legal objection to the landmark antitrust settlement between Visa U.S.A. and the country's merchants.

Mary Houghton will be recognized as Community Banker of the Year for the critical role in making ShoreBank what American Banker's editorial board called "the gold standard of community development banks." One of the few such banks that can boast high profitability, ShoreBank has earned national recognition for its role in improving communities by making loans that many other banks will not.

Since the inaugural Banker of the Year Awards in 2001, the awards gala has become the industry's premier event, attracting a who's who of lawmakers, regulators, and leading executives. Prominent keynote speakers for the awards gala have included House Banking and Financial Services Committee Chairman Mike Oxley (2001), New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer (2002), and New York State Banking Superintendent Diana Taylor (2003). This year's keynoter will be announced in the coming weeks.

American Banker editor in chief Longobardi also announced that this year's event will benefit The High School of Economics and Finance (HSEF), a nationally recognized and award-winning New York City public high school that offers a demanding college preparatory program for 700 students with special emphasis on economics and finance.

Banker of the Year Awards honorees are selected solely by the editors of American Banker in an independent and journalistic process. A Special Report titled Best in Banking 2004, showcasing profiles of the 2004 honorees and a wrap-up of the year's most important stories and trends, will be published in the December 2nd edition of American Banker.
