LEHIGH VALLEY, Pa., Oct. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Any product that challenges a traditional practice in any marketplace must show true performance benefits, provide a competitive edge for a user and be cost- effective, among other factors, to gain acceptance among customers. Such was the case in the paint and coatings industry with Airflex(R) EF811 emulsion, Air Products Polymers, L.P.'s featured emulsion product on display and the subject of several presentations this week at the International Coatings Expo being held October 27-29 at McCormick Place North in Chicago, Ill.
"Our customers have told us we have changed the game," said Nick Mittica, coatings marketing manager for Air Products Polymers. "We knew going in that Airflex EF811 emulsion was a major breakthrough for the coatings industry, but hearing it from our customers is the ultimate compliment. Economic issues at one time limited the broad use of VAE technology. That's no longer the case, and formulators have a choice. VAE's have become accepted as a workhorse product."
Airflex EF811 emulsion, introduced more than one year ago, is a vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) emulsion product for use in architectural paints. This emulsion product meets all the required high performance attributes paint formulators traditionally expect of VAE emulsions and is cost competitive with vinyl acrylic products. Additionally, Airflex EF811 emulsion's advanced capabilities provide formulators with an answer to ever-tightening environmental restrictions on the permitted levels of VOCs in coatings.
Mittica said Air Products' 30 years of worldwide experience in the market and recognition as the world leader in VAE emulsions allowed the company to work closely with interested customers using real world applications prior to product launch to provide customers a true capabilities preview. "By working with customers that consistently want to be out in front of the leading edge of technology, the product got evaluated by companies looking for a competitive edge. They recognized the performance, cost and environmental benefits. Our customers are pleased that we're out there creating new products to meet their needs of the future," he said.
Airflex EF811 polymer emulsion is an aqueous dispersion of a VAE copolymer developed specifically as a high-performance, cost-competitive replacement for vinyl acrylic copolymers. Formulators can replace the vinyl acrylic in their formulations on an equivalent weight basis with this new VAE to gain improved performance, or optimize their formulations by reducing the levels of solvent, thickener or even latex to provide significant formulated cost savings.
Intensive applications and development testing prior to product market release showed Airflex EF811 emulsion to be a superior VAE in performance features, including scrub resistance, low temperature touch-up, formulation capability at low VOC levels and alkaline hydrolysis resistance over masonry substrates. The product exhibits excellent ambient and low temperature touch- up properties in contractor flat paints, a noted concern of many contractors, particularly at low VOC levels. In scrub resistance tests, Airflex EF811 emulsion significantly out-scrubs both conventional high scrub vinyl acrylics, as well as newer, low-VOC vinyl acrylics. In addition, Airflex EF811 emulsion requires only a minimal amount of coalescing solvent and allows the paint formulator to meet VOC requirements easily.
