LOD, Israel and KISTA, Sweden, Dec. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AudioCodes , a leading provider of Voice over Packet (VoP) technologies and Voice Network products, and OptiMobile, AB, a leading company in the field of seamless voice telephony over different wireless networks, together with the Swedish Institute of Computer Science (SICS), today announced their collaboration in converged voice over wireless (VoIP over WLAN, WiFi) and GSM networks. Using AudioCodes' Mediant(TM) Converged VoIP Media Gateways, OptiMobile will enhance its WBX(TM) solution for the delivery of mobile voice services over WLANs.
"AudioCodes' Mediant wireless media gateways will enhance our ability to offer high quality enhanced voice services at a lower cost than existing GSM and UMTS mobile network technologies," said Lars Edman, CEO at OptiMobile. "We expect that collaborating with AudioCodes and SICS will strengthen our position as a leader within the field of network convergence between VoIP and cellular telephony."
The Mediant(TM) family of converged (wireline/wireless) media gateways consists of market-ready, standards-compliant, cost-effective converged VoIP Media Gateway platforms that can scale from low-density wireless enterprise networks up to high-density core network deployments. By supporting wireline and wireless (UMTS, GSM and CDMA) in the same gateway, the Mediant gateways provide a unique solution specifically suited for Fixed-Mobile-Convergence applications.
"The collaboration with OptiMobile and AudioCodes provides an excellent opportunity for SICS to deploy our technical expertise to optimize the quality of wireless voice over IP. At the same time we will receive feedback for our further research," said Gunnar Bjurel, CEO at SICS. "It's also very inspiring to contribute to the development of a very promising Swedish high-tech company."
"We are glad to be part of OptiMobile's and SICS' highly-innovative and advanced solution," said Yehuda Hershkovits, Vice President Systems Group, at AudioCodes. "VoIP enables operators to extend their reach and offer telephony services regardless of the access technology, while using a unified core network. Combining cellular telephony-based services with the wide spreading WiFi enterprise networks is a flexible and cost-effective way to address the requirements of today's enterprises."
The combination of interoperable and complementary OptiMobile/AudioCodes products will enable the realization of a dual WLAN/GSM phone system. The partners in this collaboration intend to test the endeavor in the Kista Galleria, a Swedish shopping complex of more than 160 shops and 30 restaurants. This collaboration is funded, in part, by government agencies -- including Vinnova in Sweden and Matimop in Israel.
