ORLANDO, Fla., Feb. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Today, Varian, Inc. introduced its newest line of FT-IR (Fourier Transform Infrared) and Raman spectrometers, showing for the first time at Pittcon 2005.
The new spectroscopy range, acquired from Digilab, LLC in September 2004, includes FT-IR instruments, FT-IR imaging microscopes, and FT-Raman spectroscopy instruments. The products are widely recognized as "best in class" solutions for a number of applications in pharmaceutical and biotechnology research, as well as industrial materials research.
The new line complements Varian, Inc.'s high performing UV-Vis-NIR and fluorescence products and enables the company to provide its customers with a total solution for their molecular spectroscopy needs. Varian, Inc. is applying its experience in sales, service, distribution, and marketing to boost the overall value of these newly acquired products and expects to strengthen its position in a global business currently estimated at around $500 million annually.
The products offered include: the Scimitar(TM) Series routine FT-IR, the Excalibur(TM) Series -- applied research FT-IR, the FTS 7000(TM) Series -- advanced research FT-IR, microscopy and imaging tools, and a dedicated oil analyzer. Also available is the Synergy(TM) FT-Raman module for use with the Excalibur and FTS-7000 Series, which complements information collected through FT-IR, providing a more complete picture of the sample being analyzed.
These products are designed to meet the specific needs of the full range of spectroscopy customers. Whether the requirement is for a high sensitivity FT-IR imaging system, such as would be used for rapid classification of bacteria strains in food, or for a more routine instrument, such as would be used for lubricant analysis, end-users can expect the highest quality products backed by Varian, Inc.'s first-class customer service and support.
Molecular spectroscopy is a technique used by scientists to determine the structure, function, and dynamics of a substance based upon its electromagnetic characteristics. FT-IR spectroscopy uses the absorption spectrum of a compound to determine its molecular structure, while Raman spectroscopy uses the scattering of laser light to provide complementary information. Both techniques have applications in quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) testing and the determination of biological tissue composition.
Infrared is among the company's information rich detection offerings, which provide users with multi-dimensional layers of knowledge. Varian, Inc. is focused on making information rich detectors more accessible and usable, and the company's line of FT-IR instrumentation fits into that strategy.
