Trapeze Networks(TM), the award-winning provider of the
enterprise wireless LAN (WLAN) Mobility System(TM), today announced
that NHTV Breda University in the Netherlands has installed a Trapeze
WLAN, with the help of its European system integrator Vosko, to give
wireless access anywhere on campus to its 6,000 students, teachers and
administrators.
With a focus on "the experience economy," NHTV Breda University of Professional Education specializes in tourism, hospitality, entertainment and mobility. Students from across Europe and the rest of the world come to historic Breda in the Netherlands to learn the practical aspects of international hotel management, tourism management, media and entertainment management, urban and rural planning, and traffic management.
To facilitate the core values of the University, the Education department at NHTV wanted to provide students and teachers with a more flexible way to work and learn. The goal was to provide students and employees with access to a variety of information resources, such as educational software and the Internet, regardless of where they are on campus or what kind of device they use.
"The collaboration between our IT staff, our system integrator Vosko, and the Trapeze Networks team was instrumental in the seamless and problem-free implementation and integration of this wireless network," said Ferry de Jong, Head of ICT Department at NHTV Breda University.
NHTV occupies five buildings on its picturesque campus, and the buildings are interconnected by a local fiber network. Because of the high bandwidth available on the fiber infrastructure, the network can be seen as one local network. The individual multi-story buildings have complete wireless coverage thanks to the Trapeze Mobility System(TM).
"To keep a network of this size operational and manageable, it's crucial that the system be designed from the outset to scale," continued de Jong. "Trapeze stood out among wired and wireless network equipment providers with its ability to provide a robust, secure enterprise-class wireless system that would scale to encompass a network of this size, yet still be easy to design and manage."
One of the unique characteristics of the school's network is that the virtual LANs (VLANs) are totally transparent and available throughout the complete infrastructure. Students, educators and other users are divided into functional groups and after the login, Authorization and Authentication process, they are automatically redirected to their own VLANs, from which they can connect to their specific systems, applications and peripherals.
Trapeze's Identity-Based Networking feature makes this structure possible. With Identity-Based Networking, users' access policies, including VLAN assignments, authentication and encryption requirements, roaming policies and quality of service (QoS) parameters follow them wherever they roam on the network, whether wired or wireless. Wherever students or educators move on the NHTV campus, the Trapeze WLAN recognizes them as authenticated users and provides them with continuous service.
RingMaster(TM), Trapeze's full life cycle software tool suite, facilitates easy network management, so the entire wireless system can be managed from a single location. NHTV has installed over 200 Trapeze Mobility Points(TM), which do not require any configuration upfront; all intelligence is controlled centrally by the Mobility Exchange(TM) switches. As a result, management of the network is completely centralized at NHTV's IT department.
Access to the NHTV campus network is based on IEEE 802.1X Authentication, which uses a unique user ID and password combination to process login requests. By using 802.1X, NHTV can ensure that users, regardless of what wireless client they use, can securely access the network.
