TI Maps the Evolution of WLAN: From Technology to Utility

TAIPEI, Taiwan, June 1 /PRNewswire/ -- WLAN is shifting from a stand- alone, data-centric point product to an embedded utility in the digital home, noted Dr. Kun-Shan Lin, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) vice president, during his keynote address to industry executives attending COMPUTEX TAIPEI 2005. Dr. Lin discussed factors which will lead to success in this evolving WLAN industry. Dr. Lin's keynote presentation is available online at http://www.ti.com/broadband_presentations .

"Today consumers' home networks consist of a modem, a router and a wireless access point interacting with at least one PC. The integration of these elements into a unified gateway with storage is the heart of tomorrow's network. In the near future, this network will expand to incorporate communication and consumer electronics devices and eventually include security and home control applications," said Dr. Lin. "WLAN is the most logical choice for seamless and simple connectivity in this smart home of the future."

The Wi-Fi market, which has grown tremendously over the past few years, will continue to flourish in Asia and the other regions of the world, especially in the consumer electronics segment. Dr. Lin noted that to address this market, companies must offer a broad portfolio of solutions including DSL, WLAN, voice, mobile wireless and consumer electronics, along with the ability to integrate at the system, board and chip levels. In addition, in order for WLAN to become a utility, these solutions must successfully address industry challenges like security, ease of use/installation, interoperability and system stability.

"Innovation in communications and entertainment applications will drive the market for the next decade," Dr. Lin concluded. "As broadband and consumer electronics converge, TI is well positioned to help our customers succeed through our comprehensive silicon, software, and systems portfolios which they can use to create integrated, innovative products quickly."

Vorsicht, geheim!
