A week of exciting competition ended in triumph for
several high school speech and debate students from across the United
States. More than 2,800 qualifiers from 943 schools across the nation
competed in Philadelphia, PA, for awards and scholarships at the
Lincoln Financial Group(R)/National Forensic League National Speech
Tournament. Twenty-six competitors earned college scholarships from
Lincoln Financial Group for their efforts and skills in public
speaking and debate.

Additionally, Lincoln Financial Group presented $500 honoraria to the speech coaches of the first- and second- place winners of the Lincoln Financial Group(R) Scholarship Video Speech Contest. Five Participants of the Year were randomly chosen and awarded $1,000 scholarships. One NFL participant won a David Akers' autographed Philadelphia Eagle's football jersey and a trip for two to Lincoln Financial Field(R) in Philadelphia to attend a Philadelphia Eagles football game.
During the Lincoln-Douglas Debates round Friday afternoon, Abraham Lincoln, portrayed by Richard "Fritz" Klein, one of the foremost Lincoln actors of today, spoke on the importance of oratory skills and encouraged participants to use these skills to positively influence moral and social issues. The Lincoln-Douglas Debates take their name from the senatorial campaign debates of 1858, when respected orator and Illinois Democrat Stephen Douglas went head-to-head with Republican challenger Abraham Lincoln during a series of seven debates on the subject on slavery and states' sovereignty.
The National Forensic League also presented Lincoln Financial Group Chairman and CEO Jon A. Boscia with an honorary membership. Membership in this elite group has only been offered twenty-five times in the NFL's eighty-year existence. Members include former presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Hubert Humphrey, and former senate member Everett Dirksen.

The 2005 National Speech Tournament was held June 12-17 in Philadelphia, PA.
