StorageTek Celebrates the Sale of Its 1,000th SL500 Tape Library

LOUISVILLE, Colo., June 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- StorageTek(R) , the world's most trusted partner for storing and managing critical business information, today announced that it has shipped its 1,000th StreamLine(TM) SL500 modular tape library to The University of Notre Dame Australia. The company reached this milestone in just nine months, surpassing internal projections.

The SL500 has received numerous industry awards over the past nine months for its reliability, performance and scalability. Last week, it received the prestigious StorAge Magazine award for backup hardware product of the year, and earlier this month it won an MVP award for best backup hardware product from the Storage World Conference. It has also received honors as Datamation magazine's Product of the Year in the enterprise server category and currently is a finalist in Windows & IT Pro Reader's Choice Awards.

"The SL500 is a data-protection workhorse," said Jon Benson, vice president and general manager, of StorageTek's Automated Tape Solutions Group. "Mid-range customers appreciate that it lets them meet the increasing demands of reduced backup windows, growing compliance regulations and a staggering 92 percent average annual growth rate in the amount of data they must protect."

Among the leading organizations around the world who trust the SL500 to archive and help protect their business critical information are Carlson Companies, the Aquarium of Genoa, Binda Group, Hachette Rusconi, Kia Motors America and Palmetto Health.

The 1,000th SL500 has been shipped through an OEM partner to Australia's University of Notre Dame, which will use it to help manage student information. Steady enrollment growth has increased the university's need for a flexible, cost-effective and highly reliable solution to manage and protect its data.

"We chose the SL500-based Sun StorEdge L500 because it provided us with a cost-effective, flexible library that met our current data storage needs within the capacity of our budget and with significant headroom to scale to meet future requirements," said Andrew Crow, director of Information Technology Systems for The University of Notre Dame Australia. "It is the perfect solution to meet our evolving data-storage needs, which get more demanding as student numbers grow -- each of our communication and media students, for example, can consume more than 40Gb of temporary storage each during project work on a semester basis. The library's performance, scalability, reliability and manageability will enable us to manage and protect our data for years to come."

The SL500 provides end users with an extremely adaptable platform designed to accommodate current and future storage consolidation and data protection needs for years to come. With its flexible, modular design, the SL500 can effectively serve as a mid-range library, a next-tier solution for organizations using autoloaders and small libraries, and as a key component of a long-range storage consolidation strategy. "The shipment of the 1,000th library is a significant milestone for StorageTek," said Dianne McAdam, Senior analyst and partner, Data Mobility Group. "The SL500 offers the benefit of the StreamLine enterprise class technology in a compact design which makes it a desirable solution for midrange customers with high data growth requirements."
