The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) yesterday
granted one petition in full and another in part to extend the
continuous wireless communications rebuilding efforts in the Gulf
Coast states affected by Hurricane Katrina. The FCC's decision allows
the wireless industry to continue its work through funding made
available from the Universal Service Fund (USF).
"I can think of no better way to use USF funds than to help reconnect those that were affected by Hurricane Katrina," said CTIA-The Wireless Association(R) CEO and President Steve Largent. "The FCC must be recognized for its ongoing support for the victims of the hurricane. Schools and libraries are being rebuilt. Health facilities are being restored. The Gulf Coast's way of life is slowly being returned."
The Commission extended federal Lifeline Katrina support by three months. This allows eligible wireless carriers to continue to make their services available for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.
"The Commission's decision proves just how vital wireless services are throughout the nation," continued Largent.
