Internationally-acclaimed architecture and urban
planning firm The Jerde Partnership today announced that Zlote Tarasy,
a premier mixed-use project in central Warsaw, has won the 2006
Architectural Review MIPIM Future Project Award in the Retail and
Leisure category. The award was presented at a March 16 ceremony held
in conjunction with MIPIM, an annual international real estate event
that takes place in Cannes. It marks the third award bestowed upon
Zlote Tarasy, which is expected to open late 2006.
Jerde designed Zlote Tarasy as a blend of urban public space and architecture that will reconnect and revitalize Warsaw's fragmented urban fabric. The 225,000-square-meter project features a central terraced plaza that is accessible from an adjacent train station and existing pedestrian tunnels. The terraced plaza is enclosed by an iconic, undulating glass roof conceived by Jerde as a metaphor for the tree canopies that shade Warsaw's historic parks. Each of the terraces contains specialty retailers and restaurants and offers views of the activity below, including concerts and events. Mid-rise towers encircling the terraced plaza will house offices.
"I am honored that Zlote Tarasy has received this award," said David Rogers, Jerde senior vice president and director of design. "The firm has worked very closely with the developer ING Real Estate to design Zlote Tarasy as an experiential project that respects Warsaw's past and anticipates its future. When the project opens, it will reconnect the project area to the city and realize the site's potential as the center of a large urban system."
Namba Parks Named Finalist by Urban Land Awards Jury
Jerde-designed Namba Parks in Osaka, Japan, has also been selected as one of 10 finalists for the 2006 Urban Land Institute Awards for Excellence: Asia Pacific. The project has won four awards since opening in September 2003.
Namba Parks was designed by Jerde to create a new natural experience for Osaka's dense urban core that celebrates the interaction of people, cultures and recreation. The project's 9.2-acre site features a lifestyle commercial center crowned with a rooftop park that gradually ascends eight levels. In addition to providing a highly visible green component in a city where nature is sparse, the sloping park connects to the street, welcoming passers-by to enjoy its trees, lawns, seasonal plants, water features and outdoor terraces. Beneath the park, a canyon carves an experiential path through specialty retail and entertainment venues.
Numerous Jerde-designed projects around the world have received awards since the firm was founded in 1977. Other award-winning projects include Japan's Roppongi Hills, RiverWalk Kitakyushu, La Cittadella, and Canal City Hakata; Hangzhou Lakeshore Development in China; Langham Place and The Arcade at Cyberport in Hong Kong; The Netherlands' Beursplein and Klanderiij; Glasgow Fort in the United Kingdom; Universal CityWalk and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles; Bellagio and Fremont Street Experience in Las Vegas; and Horton Plaza in San Diego.
