Government Computer News Selects Sun Microsystems' Newest Industry-Standard Sun Fire x64 Servers as a 'Best of FOSE' Award Winner

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. today announced that the "Galaxy" Sun Fire(TM) X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers received a Government Computer News (GCN) "Best of FOSE" award at the FOSE 2006 trade show in Washington, D.C. Sun's newest x64 (x86, 64-bit) servers, which were announced in September 2005, were nominated for their industry-standard performance and operating system flexibility, which includes support for the Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) and others. The GCN "Best of FOSE" awards recognize the latest innovations and groundbreaking products and solutions in the government IT industry.

The Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers, powered by the Dual-Core AMD Opteron(TM) processor with Direct Connect Architecture, offer up to twice the performance, consume about one-third the power and are one-quarter the size of similar servers from competitive vendors, delivering a combination of performance, features and value to customers that is unmatched by any other server supplier. They also offer customers the choice of running Solaris 10, the most advanced operating system on the planet, and standard distributions of Linux and Windows. Together, the Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers have set 27 world-record benchmarks since they were announced a little more than six months ago.

Judges from GCN and sister publication Washington Technology sorted through approximately 200 product nominations to name 13 "Best of FOSE" winners. Nominated products were judged by a panel of GCN editors, writers and technology analysts, based on product criteria in four key areas: innovation, usability, specifications and value. The "Best of FOSE" awards were presented at the show by Tom Temin, executive vice president and editor in chief of PostNewsweek Tech Media.

"Sun is honored to receive a 'Best of Fose' award from Government Computer News," said Graham Lovell, senior director of x64 servers, Network Systems Group, Sun Microsystems. "This award represents the fact that our newest industry-standard Sun Fire x64 servers have broken ground in the government industry based on our clear competitive differentiators -- performance, power and price."

"It's no surprise that these x64 servers were honored at last week's FOSE conference in Washington, D.C, especially given their sustained system design, enterprise class reliability and focus on energy efficiency," said Kevin Knox, vice president, Worldwide Commercial Business Development, AMD. "Based on single or Dual-Core AMD Opteron processors, the Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 servers are perfect for addressing the government's needs today: industry standard x86 hardware capable of handling legacy 32-bit or future 64-bit software, all with leading performance per-watt on the market."
