BP Becomes Climate Action Leader

LOS ANGELES, April 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- BP has successfully certified its greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions inventory with the California Climate Action Registry (Registry), becoming the first in the global energy industry to earn the distinction of Climate Action Leader(TM). BP is publicly and voluntarily reporting its GHG emissions from the refining, distribution and sales of gasoline in California under this rigorous registry program.

BP's certified GHG emissions for 2002-2004 are now available through the Registry's website at http://www.climateregistry.org/CARROT/Public/. As the largest producer of oil and gas in the United States, BP has been very active in addressing the issues around climate change and believes it has a responsibility to find and implement solutions to the problem.

BP is committed to continuing its support and investment in renewable and alternative energy sources, with its interests in solar, wind, and gas-fired power generation, as well as hydrogen for power. As part of this commitment, BP launched a new low carbon power generation business, BP Alternative Energy, which is a significant part of BP's overall portfolio of programs to reduce GHG emissions while providing consumers with cleaner fuels. BP plans to invest up to $8 billion over the next ten years to create a low carbon power business.

BP Alternative Energy recently announced a $1 billion hydrogen fueled power project to be built in Carson, CA. This first of its kind plant will generate clean electricity with minimum carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions.

The Registry, created by the California legislature in 2000, is a non-profit public/private partnership that helps companies and organizations throughout the United States to track, publicly report and reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. The results are certified by independent third-parties to ensure compliance with Registry protocols and standardization across participants and sectors. Organizations that are willing to meet the accounting standards and third party certification requirements of the Registry show their serious intent to address climate change. The Registry has been widely recognized as a gold standard for public reporting of greenhouse gases.

"BP is at the forefront of this issue on so many different levels," said Diane Wittenberg, President of the California Climate Action Registry. "It is the first company in the oil sector to report into California's voluntary program, it is pushing new technology to greatly reduce GHG emissions in the future with its new hydrogen/carbon capture project in Carson, and it has committed to and achieved real GHG reductions. We are proud to have BP as a member of the Registry."

BP is of one of the world's largest energy companies, providing its customers with fuel for transportation, energy for heat and light, retail services and petrochemicals products for everyday items. It is the largest oil and gas producer in the U.S. and one of the largest refiners. BP also operates about 13,000 gas stations nationwide. http://www.bp.com/

The California Climate Action Registry is a non-profit public/private partnership that serves as a voluntary greenhouse gas (GHG) registry to protect, encourage, and promote early actions to reduce GHG emissions. Over 70 major companies, cities, government agencies and NGOs measure and publicly report their GHG emissions through the Registry. http://www.climateregistry.org/
