WATSONVILLE, Calif., April 12 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Granite Construction Incorporated announced today that Granite Construction Company, in joint venture with Flatiron Constructors, Inc. of Longmont, Colorado and Parsons Transportation Group of Washington, DC (Audubon Bridge Constructors Joint Venture), has been awarded a $347.9 million bridge project at St. Francisville, near Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Granite's portion of the contract is approximately $87 million or 25%. The award was made by the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development.
The Design/Build project provides for a new cable stayed-bridge across the Mississippi River approximately 30 miles north of Baton Rouge. The overall project is 12 miles long and includes access roads, approaches, and the bridge itself.
The cable-stayed bridge has a main span of approximately 1,583 feet, back- spans of approximately 641 feet, a navigational clearance of 65 feet, and a width of 62 feet as well as two towers 457 feet high. The two towers sit on foundations that are located in the river and are each supported by twenty, 96-inch diameter, 220 foot long pilings. The deck is a composite structure with structural steel framing and precast concrete deck panels.
The project also includes the approach structures, which are conventional precast girder bridges largely supported by precast piling. In addition there are seven other small bridges on the project as well as approximately 8.5 miles of rural roadway.
Work is scheduled to begin in May 2006 with an estimated completion date of September 2010.
