General Re Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of
Berkshire Hathaway Inc., announced today that Michael L. Sweeney has
been promoted to Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of its aviation
underwriting subsidiary, United States Aviation Underwriters, Inc.
Formerly, Mr. Sweeney had been President and Chief Operating Officer.
Tad Montross, President and Chief Underwriting Officer of General Re Corporation said, "During his 32 years with USAU, Mike has always demonstrated a deep understanding of the industry and has been the driving force behind many of the innovative products, safety programs and client service initiatives we've introduced over the last 10 years. Mike is well known in the industry and has the right skills and attitude to lead USAU and maintain its leadership position in the market."
Mr. Sweeney replaces Harold J. Clark who retired from USAU on April 26, 2006.
"We thank Harold for his unflagging service to USAU. Harold worked at USAU for 34 years, and the leadership he provided during his tenure as Chairman helped USAU become the industry leader in the aviation insurance market," said Mr. Montross.
Mr. Sweeney is a graduate of Le Moyne College where he earned a Bachelors degree in Political Science. After serving as a pilot in the U.S. Air Force, he joined USAU in 1974 as an aviation underwriter and held a number of progressively responsible positions. He was promoted to President and Chief Operating Officer in January 1, 2001.
