USA Cares (www.usacares.us), together with the
Homeownership Preservation Foundation (www.hpfonline.org), has
provided more than $100,000 in financial grants to military family
homeowners -- within the first ninety days of the partnership between
the two organizations.
The Homeownership Preservation Foundation selected USA Cares in November 2005 to be the recipient of a $1.2 million grant over the next three years. The program was designed so grant monies could be used to prevent the foreclosure of military service members' homes by providing those qualifying service members with emergency grants.
According to John Tindall, president of USA Cares, the Homeownership Preservation Foundation and USA Cares have prevented foreclosure of 27 military homes by providing more than $100,000 in support to these households, which are located in 15 states. USA Cares has 20 foreclosure cases pending.
"Many military families are facing financial difficulty because of a loss of income due to extended military service," says Tindall, a retired Major General with the U.S. Army, and a Vietnam veteran. "By helping alleviate the financial strains placed on military families, we're helping relieve the stress our troops are facing and allowing them to focus on their jobs."
In addition to the foreclosure grants (which often solves the immediate crisis for a military family), the Homeownership Preservation Foundation provides free advice and counseling to pave the way to long-term financial health for military families. This counseling is specifically provided to military families who call 1-877-AT-EASE-1. To date, more than 100 military homeowners have received such counseling.
