Barnes & Noble, Inc. (NYSE: BKS), the world's largest
bookseller, announced today that Patricia L. Higgins and Larry Zilavy
have been appointed members of its Board of Directors.
Patricia Higgins has been Chief Executive Officer, President and Board Member of Switch and Data Facilities Inc. (2000-2004), a leading provider of neutral interconnection and collocation services; Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Research Board (1999-2000); Chief Information Officer, Corporate Vice President and Member of the Executive Committee of Alcoa (1997-1999); President of the Communications Market Business Unit and Corporate Vice President at Unisys (1995-1997); Group Vice President and Corporate Officer at Verizon (1991-1995); and held leadership positions at AT&T from 1977 to 1991. Ms. Higgins is a member of the boards of Delta Airlines, Visteon and Internap. She was a member of the board of Barnes & Noble.com from 1999 to 2004.
Larry Zilavy joined Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, Inc. in May 2006. He is involved in strategic, operational and planning issues at Barnes & Noble College Bookstores, as well as in other family investments and interests of Leonard Riggio, the Chairman of Barnes & Noble. From November 2004 to May 2006, Mr. Zilavy devoted his time to corporate board commitments, a corporation involved in developing a series of vascular and endovascular stapling products, and several philanthropic activities. From June 2003 until November 2004, Mr. Zilavy was a senior executive at Barnes & Noble, Inc., first serving as Chief Financial Officer and later as Executive Vice President of corporate finance and strategic planning. Prior to his tenure at Barnes & Noble, he spent 25 years as a banker, beginning at the Chase Manhattan Bank and later at IBJ Whitehall Bank and Trust. He is currently a member of the boards of directors of the Hain Celestial Group, Inc., GameStop Corp., and the nonprofit Community Resource Exchange, and he is a Trustee of St. Francis College in New York City.
