WEYBRIDGE, England, June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc., , the global leader in programmable logic solutions, today announced that TeraChip, a fabless developer of high performance switch fabrics, has selected the Xilinx Virtex(TM)-4 FPGA family for it's new TCIX12RS SPI-4.2 Fabric Interface Controller (FIC). Leveraging the availability of high speed SerDes and abundant memory blocks in theVirtex-4 FX family, the FIC supports redundant high speed 4 x 3.125Gbps XAUI backplane interfaces between the line card and switch fabric cards of a networking switch or router plus a SPI-4.2 interface to traffic manager and network processor devices on the line card. The high level of integration in the Virtex-4 device allows TeraChip to provide a single chip solution that complies with customer real estate limitations on their line cards and allows customisation of the FIC functionality to their exact requirements.

TeraChip chose the Xilinx solution based on the advanced functionality and field programmability of the devices which enables their customers to adjust the SerDes profile remotely. The Virtex-4 FX device performs a number of functions including the conversion of SPI-4.2 packets and the delivery of a high speed XAUI based interface across a network system backplane, queue management for up to eight classes of service (COS) per 10Gbps port. Reducing time to market was also a critical element for TeraChip who selected Xilinx ISE(TM) design tools for mapping, place and route and timing analysis functions.
"The availability of high-speed SerDes in the Xilinx Virtex platform FPGAs allows us to support our customers with a feature-rich implementation of an FIC," said Derek Granath, vice president of marketing at TeraChip. "The Virtex-4 solution was a clear choice as it gave us the advantage of faster time-to-market with low NRE and the flexibility to add customer-specific features which makes our solution more attractive to a broader range of networking applications." TeraChip plans on using next generation Virtex-5 devices in future products to further optimise their design and reduce cost and time-to-market.
About the TeraChip Switch Fabric
The TeraChip TCF1610 is a 160Gbps single chip switch fabric device supporting up to 16 10Gbps interfaces. System architectures may be expanded to provide throughput up to 1.2Tbps, and both 1:1 and 1+1 redundancy mechanisms with hitless switchovers are supported for high availability. The TCI family of Fabric Interface Controller line card devices, implemented in Xilinx FPGAs, provides the high speed serial physical interconnections across the backplane between the line card and switch fabric cards as well as the line card interface to traffic manager and/or network processor devices. Industry-standard interfaces supported include SPI-4.2, CSIX, and CSIX over LVDS.
About Xilinx Virtex-4 FPGAs
The Xilinx Virtex-4 family of domain optimized FPGAs delivers more options, higher performance and lower power than any other FPGA family available today. The Virtex-4 FX platform features the industry's only dual 32-bit embedded PowerPC processors running at up to 450MHz and delivering over 700 Dhrystone MIPs each, while providing a three-fold performance advantage over processors in competing FPGAs. Two fully integrated, UNH-certified 10/100/1000 Ethernet MACs further increase the Virtex-4 FX processing platform by saving up to 7,200 logic cells, providing increased FPGA resource availability. Devices are shipping now. For more information visit http://www.xilinx.com/virtex4.
