Toshiba International Corporation (TIC), the wholly
owned US subsidiary of Toshiba Corporation (Toshiba) of Japan, today
announced that it was recently awarded a contract to supply a large
supercritical steam turbine generator for Kansas City Power & Light's
(KCP&L's) Iatan 2 power plant project in Kansas. The net plant output
of 850-megawatts will be one of the largest supercritical plants being
built in the US today and represents state of the art technology.
Toshiba is the world's leader in the supply of supercritical steam turbine generator technology and commands a significant market share in the world's supercritical power plant marketplace. For the Iatan 2 project, TIC will supply steam turbine generator with a contract value of approximately $60 million. The plant is scheduled for commercial operation in 2010.
Mark Wohlschlegel, Vice President and Assistant General Manager of the Power Systems Division of TIC, said, "We are extremely pleased to have been awarded this unit. There are few manufacturers in the world who have manufactured a turbine generator set of this size. We were fortunate to have two 'sister units' in Japan in operation since 2001. Knowing that we had like units operating successfully provided significant comfort to KCP&L."
Headquartered in Kansas City, MO, KCP&L (www.kcpl.com) is a leading regulated provider of electricity in the Midwest. KCP&L is a wholly owned subsidiary of Great Plains Energy Incorporated (NYSE:GXP), the holding company for KCP&L and Strategic Energy, L.L.C., a competitive electricity supplier.
Burns & McDonnell was selected by KCP&L to provide detailed engineering design services for the plant. TIC and Toshiba project team members met with Burns & McDonnell in May in a launch engineering meeting to support the project engineering effort.
TIC has operated in the US for more than 35 years. With offices in San Francisco and Chadds Ford, PA, the company's Power Systems Division has built a significant business infrastructure that embraces application engineering, proposal preparation, engineering support, technical assistant support, project management, training, and aftermarket services. TIC is also involved in upgrades, modernizations, and life extensions of units from other manufacturers.
