Verizon Wireless Hosts Youth Soccer Clinic Featuring International Soccer Star Teofilo Cubillas

EVERETT, Mass., Aug. 24 /PRNewswire/ -- As part of its ongoing commitment to the Greater Boston community, Verizon Wireless will host a free youth soccer clinic at Medford High School, 489 Winthrop St., Medford, Massachusetts on Sunday, September 10th from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

Space in the clinic is limited to the first 500 players who register on Sunday, August 27th from 11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. at the Verizon Wireless Communications Store at the Gateway Plaza -- 25 Mysticview Road in Everett, Massachusetts. Boys and girls ages 5 to 17 are eligible to register. Clinic details will be provided upon registration.

During the August 27th registration, Verizon Wireless will have an inflatable soccer goal set-up for registrants to practice their skills. One lucky person will receive two tickets to see Shakira in concert at the TD Banknorth Garden on September 5th. No purchase is necessary.

All players will receive a free sports jersey, water bottle, and certificate of completion at the September 10th clinic. The first 100 participants will also get a free soccer ball.

Teofilo Cubillas To Lead Clinic

Teofilo Cubillas, considered Peru's greatest soccer player, will be on-site to lead the clinic, along with twenty trained soccer coaches. Cubillas began his soccer career at the age of 16, earning the nickname "Nene" (baby). When he was 20, he helped Peru advance to the quarterfinals of the 1970 FIFA World Cup in Mexico. In 1972 he was elected "South American Footballer of the Year." In the 1978 FIFA World Cup, Peru advanced to the second phase of the tournament due to the goals of "Nene." He has the most goals of any Peruvian football player in FIFA World Cup competition, with 10 goals. He scored 26 goals in 81 matches for the Peruvian national team, which remains the all-time record in goals for his country.

Cubillas retired in 1982, but returned to play for his first club, Alianza Lima, after its entire team died at an aircraft crash in the ocean in front of Ventanilla, Lima, on December 8th 1987, the biggest player-related disaster in the history of Peruvian football. He played a few matches mostly as a sign of both respect for the fallen and hope for the supporters. Cubillas currently resides in Coral Springs, Florida, where he owns a youth soccer camp. He was the only Peruvian named by Pele as one of the 125 greatest living footballers in March 2004.
