AFL-CIO Supports AirTran Airways Proposal to Acquire Midwest Airlines

ORLANDO, Fla., Dec. 19 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AirTran Holdings, Inc. , the parent of AirTran Airways, today announced that the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council of the AFL-CIO has issued a press release supporting the airline's proposal to acquire Midwest Airlines. AirTran Holdings, Inc., last week publicly disclosed its October 20, 2006, proposal to acquire all of the outstanding common stock of Midwest Air Group, Inc. for $11.25 per Midwest share in cash and AirTran stock or a total equity value of approximately $290 million and possibly more.

In the press release the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council of the AFL- CIO states:

The Atlanta North GA Labor Council of the AFL-CIO supports AirTran Airways' proposal to acquire Midwest Airlines. The proposal to merge the two carriers into a nationwide low fare airline is good for labor.

AirTran is responsible for creating thousands of good union jobs both in Atlanta and in other communities it serves. The airline is also responsible for lowering air fares, a move that has made Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport into the biggest in the nation.

"AirTran has shown that it can effectively compete with the legacy airlines in a way that benefits employees, airports, air travelers and communities," said Charles Fleming, President of the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council of the AFL-CIO. He added that, "AirTran has evolved into one of the premier airlines in the industry today. AirTran is a unionized airline that has shown that AFL-CIO union members can match up with the employees of any airline," Fleming said. "AirTran has great respect for organized labor and organized labor values, " he added.

It has not gone unnoticed by the AFL-CIO that William Usery, former Secretary of Labor under President Gerald Ford and a former Director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service, sits on the AirTran Board of Directors, Fleming added.

"We are honored to have this show of support from the Atlanta North Georgia Labor Council of the AFL-CIO in this proposed merger," AirTran Airways' Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Joe Leonard said. "They know that the combination of these two great carriers is a good opportunity for the labor of both airlines. Together we can create a stronger, more competitive airline."

AirTran Airways, a Fortune 1000 company and one of America's largest low- fare airlines with 8,000 friendly, professional Crew Members, operates nearly 700 daily flights to 52 destinations. The airline's hub is at Hartsfield- Jackson Atlanta International Airport, where it is the second largest carrier. AirTran Airways' aircraft features the fuel-efficient Boeing 737-700 and 717- 200 to create America's youngest all-Boeing fleet. The airline is also the first carrier to install XM Satellite Radio on a commercial aircraft and the only airline with Business Class and XM Satellite Radio on every flight.
