Sticking to New Year's Resolutions Starts With Smart Shopping

BENTONVILLE, Ark., Dec. 27 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- It's no surprise that the number one 2007 resolution is a healthier lifestyle -- eating better and exercising more(1). However, the trend each year is that most Americans are unable to stick to their resolutions. Traditionally, by the end of February, 37 percent of Americans have given up on their resolutions(2) and by year-end, only 3 percent of resolutions have been fulfilled(3).

Experts emphasize that forming new habits -- including how you shop -- is critical to success. Wal-Mart Stores offer affordable solutions to start the year right and stick to resolutions without breaking the bank.

"We realize that many consumers are starting the new year resolving to lead a healthier lifestyle," says Sandi Davis, M.S., R.D., L.D. Nutritionist/Corporate Dietitian for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. "By finding the merchandise and nutrition selections that fit your lifestyle and by making a few minor changes, you can make a positive impact, stay motivated and be on your way to success!"

Eat Better

Making simple changes in your shopping habits this year can lead to big results. Revamp your grocery list at the beginning of the year and swap out calorie-heavy treats and sweets for healthier alternatives. Place at the top of your list the healthiest fruits and vegetables: strawberries, blueberries and raspberries; broccoli and red cabbage; sweet potatoes; red and green peppers; and oranges and tangerines. Davis notes eating a variety of colors of fruits and veggies is linked to a reduced risk of cancer and heart disease.

Manage calories and portions with Nabisco's 100-calorie packs ($2.38 for 6-8 individual packs) and curb snack attacks with Wheat Thins, Honey Maid Cinnamon Crisps, Ritz Snack Mix and various other selections. Eating healthy also can be easy for busy families who want a home-style meal without the drive-thru. Wal-Mart can help here as well. For example, Wal-Mart Supercenter and Neighborhood Market delis offer a variety of perfectly seasoned rotisserie chickens.

Exercise More

Davis' top advice for the New Year is to schedule workouts each week, just like you would a work meeting or a favorite television show. Her recommendation for physical activity is fitting in at least 30 minutes a day for good health.

Worried about expensive gym memberships and fitting in the workouts? Don't sweat it -- Wal-Mart has top-of-the-line exercise equipment at great values, such as Image Treadmills ($374.57 - $468.44) and Image Elliptical machines ($364.57) -- perfect for burning off those Christmas cookie calories at home. For resolution makers looking to bulk up, Wal-Mart offers the Competitor Home Gym ($194.44), complete with 100 pound weights and bench press. For those looking for a more zenful workout, Wal-Mart offers yoga mats ($9.32) and Crystal Edge Bodyballs ($9.92), which help to increase flexibility, balance and coordination.

Look Your Best

Wal-Mart offers a variety of stylish activewear to help you look sharp as you get in shape. Danskin separates, such as capris ($13.93) and tanks ($10.93) are the perfect fit for the first Pilates class of the year. Score some serious points in Starter basketball shorts ($9.93) and Men's Starter "Grande" shoes ($26.32). Additionally, Wal-Mart offers ladies activewear made from organic cotton, which feels as good as it looks.
