Samsung Electronics, a worldwide leader in consumer electronics innovation, becomes the number one seller of digital televisions in the United States in 2006 (January through November), according to data from the NPD Group's Retail Tracking Service. In addition, Samsung achieved number one TV market share worldwide, according to DisplaySearch1. Samsung is the only manufacturer that produces, and is committed to leading, in all four major digital television technologies: LCD, DLP, Plasma, and CRT. Strong 2006 sales across each category catapulted Samsung to the number one position.
"Reaching the number one position is a very significant milestone for Samsung, which we have achieved in both the U.S. and globally for sales and volume of Flat Panel (LCD and Plasma) TVs for the first time since entering the TV business 34 years ago (in 1972) when the company only manufactured black and white CRT TVs, said John Revie, Senior Vice President, Visual Display Marketing, Samsung Electronics America. "We feel that the combination of innovative product designs that we created to flow within consumers' homes; competitive, high-performance feature sets; and excellent product reliability have contributed to this achievement. The 51/52 design series of LCD HDTVs played a major part in Samsung's achieving number one digital television sales position in the U.S. This series was Samsung's best selling LCD series of all time and among the best selling series in 2006 of any brand, and wowed consumers with a choice of luxurious lacquer-like piano-black or smooth white-pearl exterior that not only complemented home décor but enhanced it as well. With the introduction of FilterBright technology, which greatly improves contrast in bright rooms, Samsung's Plasma TV line gained more market share in 2006 than any other manufacturer, according to NPD. The introduction of both the world's first Slim DLP HDTV and the world's first LED DLP HDTV has contributed to Samsung's recently achieved number one market share in DLP sales, according to NPD data. The revolutionary SlimFit CRT HDTV dominated the CRT market largely because of its groundbreaking design, with one third the depth of traditional CRT televisions, giving consumers a Flat Panel look in an HDTV under $1000.
