Samsung Electronics, a worldwide leader in HDTV innovation, and Cox Communications, the fourth-largest cable provider in the nation, signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to accelerate the development of interactive digital cable services leveraging the Open Cable Application Platform (OCAPTM) on Samsung HDTVs, Set-top Boxes and Digital Video Recorders. Cox's interactive services and applications, including an OCAP Interactive Program Guide from Guideworks, LLC are running on Samsung OCAP-compliant DLP HDTVs in Cox's Gainesville, Fla. (FL) division. The two companies made this announcement today at the 2007 Consumer Electronics Show.
"We are excited to see substantive progress between Cox and Samsung, culminating with the December 2006 Gainesville trial that brings the retail availability of Samsung's Interactive Digital Cable Ready (iDCR) TVs in Cox's footprint one step closer," says DJ Oh, President and CEO of Samsung Electronics America, Inc. "We look forward to expanding to other Cox markets where we plan to introduce our HD Set-top boxes to the trial as well.
"Samsung shares Cox's strong commitment to delivering a high-quality customer experience and our strong collaborative work has resulted in making OCAP on retail devices a reality for our customers," said Chris Bowick, Senior Vice President, Engineering and Chief Technical Officer for Cox. "Our successful trial of the Samsung OCAP solution illustrates Cox's dedication to offering customers additional devices that will operate seamlessly alongside our current leased devices.
"Running OCAP and interactive digital cable services from the Head End through the Multi-stream CableCARD, both provided by Scientific Atlanta, to the Host is a leap forward in digital television development, which now more than ever relies on increased network connectivity to enhance the viewer's experience," said HG Lee, Vice President of the Visual Display Division R&D of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd.
"Cox is excited to partner with Samsung to offer customers a robust interactive experience," said Dallas Clement, Senior Vice President of Strategy and Development for Cox. "We are committed to providing our customers with the technology and services they need to get the most out of their electronics and our support of Samsung's Interactive Digital Cable Ready (iDCR) TVs is another example of delivering on this promise."
