Oracle Announces Upgrade to Oracle(R) SQL Developer

REDWOOD SHORES, Calif., Jan. 8 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Oracle today announced the general availability of Oracle(R) SQL Developer Release 1.1. Guided by customer feedback, this upgrade to Oracle's free database development tool includes enhancements that help simplify development cycles and improve productivity of creating and debugging SQL and PL/SQL code.

Following the initial release of Oracle SQL Developer in March 2006, this latest version offers an array of new features including a redesigned, extensible object browser with new filtering capabilities, updates to the SQL Worksheet including expanded SQL*Plus compatibility, and improved Data Grid features. Database developers can take advantage of new capabilities to import and export data from a variety of formats including spreadsheets. Oracle SQL Developer Release 1.1 also enables developers to build master and detail reports, include charts, manage snippets, and set extra user preferences for customizing their environment. In addition, the tool now allows users to browse a selection of third-party databases. Built on the Oracle JDeveloper IDE, Oracle SQL Developer enables developers to easily and efficiently build their own extensions to the product.

Oracle today also announced a new resource for developers, the SQL Developer Exchange site. The Exchange provides the Oracle SQL Developer community, a site where participants can request feature enhancements, rate feature requests, and share code supplied by the community -- from small snippets to more complex reports. The site also features links to development team blogs and product news and updates -- serving as the entry point to the forum and the Oracle SQL Developer home page. The Oracle SQL Developer Exchange is available at: http://sqldeveloper.oracle.com/ .

"Oracle continues to build on its close relationship with the developer community as we consistently address many of their requests with the new enhancements to Oracle SQL Developer Release 1.1 and the launch of the SQL Developer Exchange," said Michael Hichwa, vice president of Software Development, Oracle. "To further meet their needs and strengthen our commitment, Oracle plans to deliver frequent release cycles of Oracle SQL Developer to ensure the product's superior productivity and ease-of-use."

Customers Tout Ease of Use and Zero Cost of Development Tool

Since its initial release, Oracle SQL Developer has garnered significant industry support and is a tool that Oracle Database developers depend upon for coding and debugging. Network Solutions and The National Railway Company of Belgium are among the rapid growing community of customers that have adopted the tool.

The original domain name registrar, Network Solutions, is now a leading provider of Internet services including Web hosting, Web site design, online marketing and e-mail. According to Network Solutions senior director of Database Engineering Dominic Delmolino, Oracle SQL Developer offered numerous benefits over the expensive, platform-specific third-party tools they used in the past. "We've been using SQL Developer for the last 10 months and found the tool to be perfect for our requirements. The database access our developers need is mostly for stored procedure code and data browsing, and Oracle SQL Developer fits the bill perfectly," said Delmolino.

The National Railway Company of Belgium, which transports more than 170 million people and 55 million tons of goods each year, uses Oracle SQL Developer to help support its extensive European railway travel system and applauds the tool's affordability and flexibility. "The zero cost of ownership and the high usability played a significant role in our decision to use the lightweight SQL Developer for database development," said Gabriel Lozano-Moran, a solution architect for the Microsoft .NET Development Competence Centre at the National Railway Company of Belgium.
