Genesee & Wyoming Inc. Reports Traffic for January 2007

GREENWICH, Conn., Feb. 13, 2007 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Genesee & Wyoming Inc. (GWI) today reported January 2007 traffic volumes. GWI's traffic in January 2007 was 71,955 carloads, a decrease of 312 carloads, or 0.4 percent, compared with traffic levels in January 2006.

The table below sets forth carloading information for January 2007 and January 2006:

Genesee & Wyoming Inc. January % of January % of by Commodity Group 2007 Total 2006 Total Coal Coke & Ores 15,202 21.1% 17,390 24.1% Pulp & Paper 11,805 16.4% 12,714 17.6% Minerals & Stone 9,630 13.4% 6,593 9.1% Farm & Food Products 8,109 11.3% 5,948 8.2% Metals 6,733 9.4% 7,610 10.5% Lumber & Forest Products 6,447 9.0% 8,716 12.0% Chemicals 3,654 5.1% 3,916 5.4% Petroleum Products 3,050 4.2% 3,245 4.5% Autos & Auto Parts 1,319 1.8% 1,056 1.5% Intermodal 224 0.3% 334 0.5% Other 5,782 8.0% 4,745 6.6% Total 71,955 100.0% 72,267 100.0%

Excluding 7,915 total carloads from Genesee & Wyoming Australia, which GWI started operating June 1, 2006, and from the Chattahoochee Bay Railroad, which GWI started operating August 26, 2006, same-railroad traffic in January 2007 decreased by 8,227 carloads, or 11.4 percent. U.S. and Canada same-railroad traffic decreased by 7,482 carloads, or 10.7 percent. The decrease was principally due to a decline in lumber & forest products traffic of 2,312 carloads as a result of lower shipment volumes in GWI's Oregon and Southern Regions, a decline in coal coke & ores traffic of 2,188 carloads, primarily due to warm weather negatively affecting coal demand in GWI's Illinois Region, and a decline in minerals & stone traffic of 2,075 carloads primarily due to lower shipment volumes of salt in GWI's New York/Pennsylvania Region. All other U.S. and Canada traffic decreased by a net 907 carloads.

In the first quarter of 2006, GWI started to include haulage traffic associated with the former Rail Management Corp. railroads as part of its Other commodity carloads; previously these carloads were excluded. GWI started operating the Rail Management Corp. railroads in June 2005, and accordingly 3,153 carloads of haulage traffic have been included in the January 2006 carloading information. Haulage traffic was 3,891 carloads in January 2007.

Historically, the Company has found that carload information may be indicative of freight revenues on its railroads, but may not be indicative of total revenues, operating expenses, operating income or net income.
