Lilly Oncology on Canvas(SM) Kicks Off 2007 World Tour With Month-Long Exhibition in Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, March 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Lilly Oncology on Canvas(SM): Expressions of a Cancer Journey, an international art competition and exhibition inspiring cancer patients, their physicians, families and friends from around the world is celebrating its official world tour kick-off with a month-long display in Indianapolis. The exhibit will feature 200 pieces of art, including 51 from Indiana residents, which will be on display at the Indiana University Cancer Center from March 10 - April 7, 2007. Lilly Oncology on Canvas is presented by Eli Lilly and Company in partnership with the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship (NCCS). The exhibition, which is hosted by the CompleteLife Program of the Indiana University Cancer Center, is open to the public and free of charge.

"The CompleteLife Program at IU is about treating the whole person with comprehensive support services for the cancer journey, across both the practical and psycho-social spectrum," said Caroline Carney Doebbeling, M.D., MSc., Medical Director of CompleteLife. "Our collaboration with Eli Lilly and Company on Lilly Oncology on Canvas beautifully complements these services and we are proud to host this inspiring collection of art."

Lilly Oncology on Canvas was developed by Lilly in 2004 to help people affected by cancer express their emotions about the disease, an important part of the healing process. The 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas competition received more than 2,000 entries from 43 countries, including 492 pieces of art from the United States and Puerto Rico. The 2006 art collection will now tour the world, continuing throughout 2007 and 2008, inspiring others on their cancer journey.

"We at Lilly have been humbled by the tremendous participation into Lilly Oncology on Canvas," said Lilly President and COO John C. Lechleiter, Ph.D. "At the same time, we are proud to offer this innovative support program to help patients cope with the emotional impact of their cancer journey."

Artwork on display includes the 2006 Lilly Oncology on Canvas 'Best of Exhibition' winner, "Hair Again." Created by breast cancer survivor, retired school teacher and Ball State graduate Linda Dibblee of Midlothian, Illinois, the bold and inspiring acrylic painting depicts a profile of a woman with her hair, growing back after cancer treatment, as a colorful bouquet of flowers.

"Lilly Oncology on Canvas gives people the opportunity to express how cancer has impacted their lives," said Dibblee. "'Hair Again' is a tribute to all the people who were undergoing chemotherapy while I was receiving my cancer treatments. They continually hoped that life would return to something beautiful like a bouquet of flowers."

Also on display will be "This is Not a Dress Rehearsal," by Anne Wilson of Morganton, North Carolina, which was named the 2006 competition's 'Best of the United States.' "This is Not a Dress Rehearsal" features Wilson's late daughter Katherine just seven months after Katherine, a non-smoker, was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer at the age of 23. The photograph portrays a smiling Katherine and her dad playfully removing their hats to display their bald heads -- Katherine's from her cancer treatments and her dad's a result of his sympathetic shaving. Katherine's spirit, illustrated by the photograph and in Wilson's narrative, was considered an inspiration by all who knew her.

"Katherine would be so proud that, through Lilly Oncology on Canvas, she is helping to inspire people to live their lives in a positive way," said Wilson. "I am grateful that the photograph is reminding those impacted by cancer that life is for living and you only get one chance at it."

Artwork from 51 local area entrants will also be on display, including "Rebirth," by cancer survivor Jan Lucas-Grimm of Columbus, Indiana. "Rebirth" features a woman emerging from the stem of a flower symbolizing the resilience of one's body and reemergence of one's spirit after cancer treatment. Also from Indiana is "More Than a Statistic," a mixed media piece by artist and art teacher, Patricia Rhoden Bartels. The painting depicts a series of numbers transposed upon a silhouette of faces, reflecting that behind the many statistics about cancer, there are real people impacted by the disease. "More Than a Statistic" was named the competition's 'Best Other (Mixed Media) by a Family Member, Friend or Caregiver.'

Free Public Exhibition

The free public exhibition is being presented by Lilly and the National Coalition for Cancer Survivorship, and hosted by the CompleteLife Program of the Indiana University Cancer Center.
