Bebo Enhances Data Management for Growing Social Network
Bebo, the largest social networking site in the United Kingdom, Ireland and New Zealand and the third largest in the United States, implemented Oracle Database 10g to provide a highly reliable and scalable infrastructure for its growing social network. The Web site has more than 31 million registered users and garners over 5 billion page views each month and 1.2 million photo uploads each day, resulting in a massive amount of data to manage. Oracle Database 10g provides the infrastructure to manage this data and is described by Michael Birch, Bebo's chief executive officer, as the company's "single most important piece of infrastructure."
"With a user base that grows 20 percent each month and expects 24/7 availability, we needed a highly reliable database that could easily and inexpensively grow as user demand increased," said Birch. "Other social networking sites have run into major problems because of scalability challenges, but I am confident with Oracle Database Bebo will be able to sustain the levels of growth necessary to take us where we want to go -- to market leadership and a major role in the evolution of Web 2.0."
Swisscom Delivers Media and Entertainment Offerings
Swisscom, the number one communications provider in Switzerland, implemented Oracle Communications Billing and Revenue Management to quickly deliver and bill for media and entertainment services including ringtone and movie downloads and IPTV. With Oracle's flexible, easy-to-use application, Swisscom has improved time to market for new media and entertainment services from nine months to only a few weeks. A long-time Oracle customer, Swisscom also uses Oracle's Siebel applications for its front-office and customer relationship management (CRM) application to deliver high-quality service to its more than 4 million fixed line and 4 million mobile customers, as well as broadband and IPTV subscribers.
"Oracle's vision for delivering media and entertainment services over communications channels matches our goals for our technology architecture," said Ueli Hostettler, Planning and Strategy Manager, Swisscom. "Oracle puts us in control of our media and entertainment service delivery, enabling us to improve our overall business and increase customer satisfaction."
Konami Digital Entertainment Connects Arcade Gamers
Konami Digital Entertainment Co., Ltd., a leading video game producer headquartered in Tokyo, implemented Oracle On Demand to manage subscriber information for its e-AMUSEMENT System, an arcade game where subscribers play each other remotely via a network. Through Konami's e-AMUSEMENT System, subscribers can play more games and take part in nationwide rankings. Oracle hosts, operates and manages Oracle Database 10g and Oracle Real Application Clusters for Konami. The database records scores and tracks rankings for several million subscribers, delivering high system availability and performance and alleviating operation load.
"Since the e-AMUSEMENT service is being expanded daily, we needed to upgrade our infrastructure to increase stability of the system and alleviate operation load. Oracle On Demand enables us to manage growing subscriber data and deliver fast, reliable scores and rankings to our gamers," said Mitsuhiro Masanobu, Vice General Manager, Project Solution Center, Konami Digital Entertainment. "In addition, by using a managed service, we have reduced operational costs while maintaining transparency that is necessary with an outsourced project."
