"Jerry has more than 15 years' experience with the company in environmental and regulatory issues and has done an outstanding job keeping our company on the leading edge of environmental issues," said Michael A. Beaty, Flowers' senior vice president of supply chain. "This promotion recognizes his leadership in this area, not just at Flowers but within the baking industry."

Hancock joined Flowers in 1988 as a project engineer. He was named environmental projects manager in 1991, manager of environmental affairs in 1993, and director of environmental and regulatory affairs in 2001. Hancock is a member of the American Bakers Association's energy and environmental committee, co-chairing this committee since 1996. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta.

Mediate Named Director of Sustainability

As part of Flowers Foods' sustainability initiative, the company has appointed Dale A. Mediate to director of sustainability. In this newly created position, Mediate will research and evaluate sustainability concepts and resources, track sustainability efforts, monitor the sustainability actions of outside suppliers, and provide analytical and manufacturing support for Flowers' sustainability database and manufacturing data warehouse. He will report to Jerry Hancock.

Mediate joined Flowers in 1995 as a controller trainee. During his career, he has held a number of positions, including IT business analyst, business system specialist, internal auditor, and operations trainee. Most recently, Mediate was vice president of operations at Flowers' Winston-Salem, N.C., bakery. He holds a bachelor's degree in business administration from Trevecca Nazarene College in Nashville, Tenn., and a master's in business administration/accounting from Kennesaw State University in Georgia.

"Dale's appointment reflects his depth of knowledge about the company and the valuable contributions he has made over the past 12 years," said Hancock. "He will be very involved in all aspects of our sustainability program, initially overseeing efforts to determine current energy use and develop systems to measure future use."

Headquartered in Thomasville, Ga., Flowers Foods is one of the nation's leading producers and marketers of packaged bakery foods for retail and foodservice customers.
