Oscar(R)-Winning Composer Hans Zimmer and Blue Ribbon Panel to Select Grand-Prize Winner of TCM's 8th Annual Young Film Composers Competition

ATLANTA, May 31 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Oscar(R)-winning composer Hans Zimmer, whose numerous scores include The Lion King, The Da Vinci Code and Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, will lead a blue-ribbon panel of judges in selecting the grand-prize winner of Turner Classic Movies' (TCM) 8th Annual Young Film Composers Competition on Monday, July 23, in Los Angeles. The five finalists were announced today from more than 800 aspiring film composers who submitted entries from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Spain for the competition this year.

In the running for the grand prize are Jaebon Hwang from New York City; Jeremy Schrepple from Los Angeles; Garth Neustadter from Appleton, Wisc.; James Schafer from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; and Edward White from London, England. Each will score a new 90-second clip from the silent classic Beau Brummel (1924), starring John Barrymore and Mary Astor, for the final round of judging. They will travel to Los Angeles for The Composer Expo, presented by TCM and Film Music Magazine, and a tour of the Warner Bros. lot, including the music department where the original scores of such great films as Casablanca are housed. For two days, the young composers will have an inside look at the competitive world of film and TV scoring and an opportunity to meet some of the key players in the industry. Runners up will also receive prizes, including Apple laptops and Logic Pro Software.

Talent competing in TCM's 8th Annual Young Film Composers Competition were challenged to score a brief clip from Beau Brummel, matinee idol Barrymore's portrayal of the arrogant 19th-century style mogul who enjoyed life among England's upper class until he insulted his good friend, the Prince of Wales. The competition, which ran from Jan. 1, 2007 - March 31, 2007, was opened this year for the first time to participants from not only the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada but also France and Spain.

The one-of-a-kind Composer Expo, which will be held in Los Angeles on Wednesday, July 25 at the Skirball Cultural Center, will serve as the platform for announcing the winner of this year's competition. Artistry and technical craftsmanship of film, television and multimedia music will take center stage at the 12-hour symposium of seminars, panel discussions, networking and learning opportunities, bringing together the best and brightest composers, music supervisors and other industry professionals. The highlight of the event will be a keynote panel featuring industry leaders Mark Mothersbaugh (Big Love), Mychael Danna (The Sweet Hereafter), Teddy Castellucci (Wild Hogs) and Bear McCreary (Battlestar Galactica).

Those interested in attending The Composer Expo can sign up at http://www.tcmcomposerexpo.com/. Registration is $125 and includes the full-day Composer Expo, three meals, the cocktail reception, awards ceremony and parking. Additional information is available by calling 1-800-774-3700 or 310-645-9000 ext. 702.

The Composer Expo will be followed by a reception and a keynote address by Oscar(R)-winning composer Hans Zimmer (The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, The Simpsons Movie) during a ceremony announcing the winner of TCM's 2007 Young Composers Competition, for which Zimmer serves for the third year as the head of the blue ribbon panel of judges.

Zimmer brings to the role more than two decades of experience in film scoring, a host of awards and a passion for nurturing young composers. Once the 2007 winner is named, Zimmer will mentor them through the process of scoring the silent classic Beau Brummel, by offering guidance on everything from developing musical themes to working with live musicians in a professional sound recording stage.
