NORFOLK, Va., June 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Bank of Hampton Roads, the primary subsidiary of Hampton Roads Bankshares, Inc. , is excited to announce that its 11th Annual Charitable Golf Classic raised a record-breaking $170,000 for local charities, non-profit organizations and worthwhile causes. The funds will be held in the Bank's Community Assistance Account and distributed to area organizations over the next twelve months.

The Charitable Golf Classic was held on June 21st at Sleepy Hole Golf Course in Suffolk. After enjoying lunch donated by Chanello's Pizza, participants enjoyed a picture-perfect day of golf followed by a steak dinner and reception featuring the Caribbean sounds of Joe Maniscalco. Unfortunately, none of the golfers scored the hole-in-one necessary to take home the new car generously donated by Charles Barker Lexus.

"It's our objective to make sure that each year's Charitable Golf Classic is even better than the year before and so far, we have been very successful in achieving that goal. This year's tournament was more than full with 42 teams and a record number of hole sponsors. The success of our golf tournament is because of the generosity of our customers and the Hampton Roads' business community in general and we can't thank them enough for their support."
President and Chief Executive Officer Jack W. Gibson went on to say, "Bank of Hampton Roads has always believed in giving back to our community and the Charitable Golf Classic has helped us to be able to do even more in that regard. Since the tournament's inception, we've raised nearly $900,000 for the community. Every year, we match the proceeds from the tournament dollar for dollar and use that money to help as many different charities as we possibly can. In 2006, the proceeds from our tournament helped nearly 100 different organizations including local colleges and universities, the American Red Cross, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, CHIP of Virginia, Norfolk Botanical Garden and the Virginia Aquarium. This year's record- breaking proceeds will allow us to help even more organizations over the next twelve months."
