Bell Labs Receives Excellence in Innovation Certificate From US Department of Commerce

MURRAY HILL, N.J., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced that its Bell Labs research organization has been honored with the U.S. Department of Commerce's "Recognition of Excellence in Innovation" certificate.

Presented by Robert Cresanti, Senior Technology Advisor, Office of the Secretary of Commerce, and Chief Privacy Officer for the Department, this certificate recognizes Bell Labs for its continuing role in generating innovations and technologies that are at the core of today's cutting edge voice, data and video solutions for service providers, enterprises and governments worldwide.

Specifically highlighted by Cresanti were Bell Labs innovations over the past year -- in particular the recent roll out of Alcatel-Lucent's revolutionary OmniAccess 3500 Nonstop Laptop Guardian, which was invented by Bell Labs and incubated by Alcatel-Lucent Ventures under the code name Evros. The Nonstop Laptop Guardian has been hailed as a powerful solution to address the critical IT challenges of end-point security. With this technology, IT staff can fully protect off-site laptops and laptop data remains visible and accessible to the enterprise 24/7 -- even when the laptop is off the network, offline or powered off.

Dr. Jeong H. Kim, President of Bell Labs, (see photo) accepted the certificate in a ceremony at its Murray Hill, N.J. facility with researchers and scientists from around the world in attendance both in person and via a live Webcast. Also present were John Giere, Alcatel-Lucent's chief marketing officer and head of government affairs and Dave Bishop COO/CTO for LGS, Alcatel-Lucent's subsidiary to serve the U.S. government market. Grant Seiffert, President of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA), the leading trade association for the information, communications and entertainment technology industry, also participated in the presentation. As part of this ceremony Cresanti recognized Bell Labs researchers Dr. Albert Y. Cho and Dr. Herwig Kogelnik, both of whom were recent recipients of the National Medal of Technology(R) and were in attendance at the ceremony. He also noted the achievements of recent National Medal of Technology award winner and former Bell Labs researcher Dr. James West.

"Above all else, what stands out about Bell Labs is the way in which you are innovating innovation itself. You have begun to overcome the Achilles heel that has plagued many large companies that fail to commercialize the gems of research that materialize within their R&D organizations," said Robert Cresanti. "You have created ways to accelerate the introduction of new and possibly disruptive technologies into the marketplace -- technologies that might otherwise run squarely into the wall of incremental thinking that often inhabits large organizations in large companies."

Bell Labs has long been recognized as a powerhouse for innovation in the broad field of communications as well as a center of breakthrough scientific research. In partnership with Alcatel-Lucent Research and Innovation (R&I) they continue to attract the world's preeminent scientists and generate breakthroughs that are redefining the industry and shaping the ways people live, work and play.

"Bell Labs and its researchers have been fortunate to receive numerous honors and recognition from a broad spectrum of organizations and institutions, but this particular award carries special meaning for us," said Jeong Kim, President of Bell Labs. "The Department of Commerce's recognition of our success in translating innovations into real economic benefit for Alcatel-Lucent, the country, and the world is a true honor."
