United Industrial's AAI Corporation Wins $8.6 Million Order from Royal Australian Navy for Training and Support Center Upgrades for Guided Missile Frigates

HUNT VALLEY, Md., Aug. 15 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- United Industrial Corporation announced today that its AAI Corporation subsidiary has received an $8.6 million order from the Royal Australian Navy to upgrade six On-Board Training (OBT) systems and two land-based software support centers for the service's guided missile frigates.

AAI has supported the Royal Australian Navy's OBT initiative since 1999, beginning with the delivery of six sets of training systems and software support centers for the service's FFG-class frigates.

Under the new award, AAI will modify the initial systems to meet the ships' latest inertial navigation and surface to air missile system configurations. Deliveries will begin in 30 months and extend through the ensuing four years.

The new systems will be interoperable with the U.S. Navy's Total Ships Training program. AAI has a number of significant OBT contracts with the U.S. Navy, including permanently installed on-board Generic Navy Stimulator/Simulator radar and weapon systems trainers and a complete family of Carry-On Combat Systems Trainers.

"This latest award expands our strong relationship with the Royal Australian Navy and is an endorsement of our on-board training technologies and support structure," said Robert J. Peters, vice president of AAI's Training Systems. "The fact that the Royal Australian Navy awarded this contract directly demonstrates the confidence the service has in AAI."

AAI's OBT systems operate over a wide area network, giving radar and weapon systems operators and tacticians the ability to practice combat and operational skills on their own equipment in a common synthetic environment. Skills derived from on-board training provide "train like you fight" experience and are directly transferable to real world tactical operations.

United Industrial Corporation designs, produces, and supports aerospace and defense systems through its wholly owned subsidiary, AAI Corporation, and AAI Corporation's direct and indirect wholly owned subsidiaries, AAI Services Corporation, Aerosonde Pty Ltd, Aerosonde North America Incorporated, ESL Defence Limited, McTurbine Inc., and Symtx, Inc. Its high-technology products and services include unmanned aircraft systems, training and simulation systems, automated aerospace test and maintenance equipment, armament systems, aviation ground support equipment, logistical and engineering services, and maintenance, repair, and overhaul activities.
