A Salute to 'Nanny' & 'Poppy'

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich., Sept. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- You know you're a grandparent when you'd rather spend the afternoon watching Dora the Explorer than Oprah. Or, if you're Elliot Oronsky you voluntarily choose to watch your infant grandson in lieu or sending him to daycare -- when you never even changed your own son's diapers. To celebrate Grandparents Day, Del Webb communities invited grandparents to share their own grandparent moments.

Oronsky, a resident of The Club by Del Webb at Westpark in Roseville, Calif. spent the first year of his grandson's life driving two-plus hours every Monday to watch his grandson while his son and daughter-in-law went to work. Returning home Tuesday evenings, Oronsky was able to spend two days a week with the new grandbaby. He enjoyed it so much, he's volunteered to do it again with the new baby his son and daughter-in-law are now expecting.

"I ask our now four-year-old grandson if he remembers when grandpa used to baby-sit him when he was a baby," said Oronsky. "His answer is, 'I remember you grandpa, but I don't remember me.' Out of the months of babes..."

Kathleen Murphy of Stone Creek by Del Webb in Ocala, Fla. recalled a frantic call from her granddaughter at eight o'clock one evening. "You know you're a grandparent when your granddaughter calls asking you for the Tooth Fairy's address so mommy knows where to mail the lost tooth," she said.

Sylvia Austermiller of Grand Reserve by Del Webb in Grand Blanc, Mich. said, "You know you're a grandparent when you're willing to stand on a black asphalt path in 100-degree heat holding two cups of melting slushies while trying to return waves to your grandkids as they spin around on the Tilt-a- Whirl."

Barbara Graham of Sun City Shadow Hills in Indio, Calif. remembered being a guinea pig for her granddaughter in cosmetology school. "You know you're a grandparent when your 19-year-old granddaughter colors your hair for practice and it doesn't come out very good, but you forgive her anyway. She cried and said, 'I am sorry and I love you so much; I will fix it.' And she did!"

Home to tens of thousands of grandparents, Del Webb communities would like to salute every grandparent who has ever given up a Friday evening poker game in favor of a sleepover with the grandkids. Backyard tents and flashlight tag are sure to be some of your grandkids favorite memories of "Nanny" and "Poppy" (or whatever term of endearment your grandchildren have given you). Happy Grandparents Day!
