Channel One News, the preeminent news and content provider for teens reaching over six million students in middle and high schools across the country, unveiled today a new reporter line-up for the 2007-08 broadcast season.
Tony Anderson, Chris Browne and Jessica Kumari join Channel One News's prestigious roster of alumni journalists that includes Anderson Cooper, Lisa Ling, Maria Menounos and Tracy Smith. The new reporters bring experience in and a passion for reporting on cultural events, domestic and international news. They also share a commitment to breaking down the day's issues expressly for their teen-aged viewers, presenting an unbiased view of the news to educate and inform classroom and peer-to-peer discussion.
Chris Browne comes to Channel One News from the assignment desk at CNN, where he produced and covered stories in the Northwest Region. Fluent in Spanish, Chris often contributed to CNN en Español's coverage of the region. Chris graduated with honors from Princeton University in 2005.
Jessica Kumari launched her career in journalism at Georgetown University as a reporter and writer for college station, GUTV. She has worked at NBC as a Production Assistant and Desk Assistant for various shows including, The News with Brian Williams and NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw. Most recently, Jessica was an anchor and reporter for News 12 The Bronx/Brooklyn.
Tony Anderson began his broadcast journalism career at BET Networks as a guest VJ Host. Most recently, Tony worked at MTV Networks in New York as a performer and panelist for several shows on the network. Tony is a Delaware State University graduate with Bachelors of Arts Degree in Mass Communications and a Minor in Theater Arts.
During the first week of programming, students are getting to know the new faces of Channel One News through a special "Who am I" segment that will highlight reporter profiles as a way to foster close connections between those reporting and those viewing the daily news and public affair broadcast. The reporters will also solicit ongoing feedback and user-generated content from the audience they serve, creating continuity between student interest and news coverage.
Overseeing the new team reporters from a New York City-based news studio is Executive News Producer, Kristy Schantz. "Jessica, Chris and Tony are poised, professional and enthusiastic about the opportunity to make news more interesting and relevant to teens. They truly see this as a chance to impact teen news literacy," said Schantz. "Just a week on the job, they are hard at work in the field reporting from New Orleans and other areas where news and debate is unfolding."
On the programming side, the tone, pace and format of Channel One News comes back on air with an extra shot of energy. Through a newly formed partnership, Channel One News now has the global reach and production capabilities of NBC News' Peacock Productions, giving reporters immediate and unprecedented access to breaking news stories across the country and around the world. Students and educators can also look forward to the integration of more student-generated content. As a springboard into journalism, student generated news will enable reporting of very local events and story angles, and give students a platform to encourage discussion, express feedback and opinions on news, politics and culture. Heading up the production for NBC News' Peacock Productions is Tim Peek.
Schantz added, "From our star reporters to editorial and production, we've got the talent to launch into a new school season with more vibrancy and energy than ever. At the end of the day, our job is to get teens talking about issues that are affecting their world. And while we will always try new and interesting ways to inform, that commitment never changes."
